She was born and raised in Clitheroe, England. A copy of the poem was in Jonathan Edmund Browning’s wallet when he passed away.

Old Clitheroe

There’s a spot in old England,
That is still dear to me,
On the banks of the Ribble
That runs to the sea;
In the shade of old Pendle,
Whose summit I’ve trod
Ere a thought of its grandeur,
Had entered my nod;
I’ve traversed its meadows
And pastures so green,
In my wanderings, their equal
I’ve never yet seen;
I’ve plucked its wild flowers,
Such abundance there grows,
And inhaled the sweet fragrance
Of hawthorn and rose.

I fancy with rapture
This sweet month of May,
How the larks they will sing,
And the lambkins will play;
Sing on thou sweet warbler,
Give one strain for me,
Whose home is now far away
O’er the sea;
I’ve oft rambled o’er Salthill,
And round the lime kilns,
By the river at Brungerley
Watching its rills;
I’ve wandered o’er Longridge
And Waddington Fells,
And I quaffed the clear crystal
Of Walloper Well.

It’s dear ancient Castle,
Its towers and walls,
How my youth seems renewed
At the scene I recall;
How much I revere thee,
Words fail me to show,
Thou gem of the valley,
Dear old Clitheroe!
When I first left thy shelter,
I had no reason why, except youthful fancies
My fortune to try;
At fortune I frown not,
To me she’s been fair,
And I sigh when I think
Of lost friends over there.

To see the once more,
I’ll brave ocean and tide,
Dear home of my childhood,
My manhood and pride;
Father, mother and friends,
In thy old church yard lie.
And two babes whose sweet memory
Still dims my eye;
Old ocean, thy terrors
No one can deny,
When thy billows are tempest tossed,
Rending the sky,
But be thou propitious,
And let me once more
Reach in safety the friends
On my own native shore.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64234489258085553.post-47898832679732467702010-05-02T19:33:00.000-07:002010-05-02T19:35:01.851-07:00Picture of John Ellis and Mary Ann Emmett EllisI would love also to get the original picture of the John Ellis and Mary Ann Emmett Ellis family that has their adopted daughter Sarah in the picture. Cummings. On 19 Mar 1851 the company hired the steamer Alexander Scott and traveled to St. Louis 26 Mar 1851. (Ellen Ship records, Mormon Immigration Index) They decided to stay in St. Louis and save money to cross the plains. They have two children Heneretta Alameda born 1851 and Imogene Louvinia born 1853.

John Riley and Harriet Emmett Riley are married in England in about 1841. They try to leave England in 1849 but their money(from TE book) and all possession and clothing (obit of Harriet) was stolen. They have three children: Sarah Ann born 1845, George Heber born 1848 and John Willard born 1851. Sarah Ann dies in 1847. John, Harriet, George and John Willard leave England about 1852 (obit of Harriet) in joined the Abraham O. Smoot Company leaving 1 Jun 1852. They arrived in SLC 3 Sep 1852.(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database) They settled in Ogden and John was a farmer.

Thomas and Nancy Emmett and their two daughters emmigrate to Utah in the William Field Company leaving 21 Jun 1854 arriving in Salt Lake City either Sep or Oct 1854. .(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database) They continue on to settle in Ogden, UT. Thomas farmed and about 1866 he started Emmett Bottling works and producing sasparilla mostly rootbeer. Mary Ann and John Ellis are married 4 Jun 1853 in St. Louis. They have a son named George Emmett Ellis in St. Louis born Mar 1854 but he dies in Jul 1854. John Ellis is baptized 28 Nov 1855. Early in June we went on the steamboat "Arabia" and in about seven days we arrived at Florence. (journal of John Ellis) Mary Ann and John Ellis and Ann Emmett join the Daniel D. MacArthur Handcart Company 11 Jun 1856 and arrive in SLC 26 Sep 1856. John Ellis and his family settle in Ogden and have a farm. (Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database)

Anne Emmett age 19 leaves Liverpool on ship Cynosure 29 Jul 1855 from the port of Liverpool and arrives in New York Port 5 Sep 1855. (Ship records Cynosure and Mormon Immigration Index) Stayed at Castle Gardens for about 3 days and left with company for Iowa City, IA. She meets her sister and brother in law at Florence (there is a possibility that she went to Saint Louis and lived with her sister for about nine months) and is in the Daniel D. MacArthur handcart company (with John Ellis and Mary Ann Emmett Ellis). The company arrived in Salt Lake City 26 Sep 1856. They stayed in Salt Lake for a short period and settled in Ogden, Utah.(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database). Ann Emmett marries Jonathan Browning 29 Mar 1859.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-64234489258085553.post-17268970655505986372009-02-28T17:49:00.000-08:002009-03-01T21:17:51.129-08:00James EmmettI recieved my big package of information today. Some of the Emmett family hired Mark E. Garner, SLC to do some research between 1995-2001.

Parentage of Ann Emmett
He confirmed that John Emmett's death date is really 11 May 1863 but his death/burial has not been located. I do not know how they found the date but will try to find a record in Salt Lake to prove it. I think it might be recorded in some baptism for the dead records performed in the Logan Temple on in Mar 1885. I need to also find this document in SLC.

It looks like we have the birthday and birthplace of James Emmett wrong. (the one we believe to be illegitimate). We might have the wrong Ann Emmett.
What Mark Gardner confirmed about Ann Emmett:(I need to go down and get church records)
1) She is the grandmother of John Emmet who married Sarah Boothman
2) Our Ann did marry Peter Barrit 12 Oct 1769 at Thornton-in-Craven and had one son William christened and buried in Nov 1771at Thornton-in-Craven.
3) Ann Emmett was buried 27 Jun 1789 at Thornton-in-Craven. No age listed.
4) When James Emmett Married Mary (Mally) Bell on 12 Oct 1784 at Broughton-in-Airdale. James Emmett is listed as residing at Thornton. ( I now believe this is Thornton-in-Craven-BB)

Because of these four reasons he wonders if Ann was born in Thornton-in-Craven.
