Emmigration of the Emmetts to America.
On 8 Jan 1851 on ship Ellen Thomas Emmett age 23, his wife Nancy age 18 and Mary Ann Emmett(Thomas' sister) age 28 leave Liverpool on 8 Jan 1851 and arrive in New Orleans port on 14 Mar 1851 under the direction of James W. Cummings. On 19 Mar 1851 the company hired the steamer Alexander Scott and traveled to St. Louis 26 Mar 1851. (Ellen Ship records, Mormon Immigration Index) They decided to stay in St. Louis and save money to cross the plains. They have two children Heneretta Alameda born 1851 and Imogene Louvinia born 1853.
John Riley and Harriet Emmett Riley are married in England in about 1841. They try to leave England in 1849 but their money(from TE book) and all possession and clothing (obit of Harriet) was stolen. They have three children: Sarah Ann born 1845, George Heber born 1848 and John Willard born 1851. Sarah Ann dies in 1847. John, Harriet, George and John Willard leave England about 1852 (obit of Harriet) in joined the Abraham O. Smoot Company leaving 1 Jun 1852. They arrived in SLC 3 Sep 1852.(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database) They settled in Ogden and John was a farmer.
Thomas and Nancy Emmett and their two daughters emmigrate to Utah in the William Field Company leaving 21 Jun 1854 arriving in Salt Lake City either Sep or Oct 1854. .(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database) They continue on to settle in Ogden, UT. Thomas farmed and about 1866 he started Emmett Bottling works and producing sasparilla mostly rootbeer. Mary Ann and John Ellis are married 4 Jun 1853 in St. Louis. They have a son named George Emmett Ellis in St. Louis born Mar 1854 but he dies in Jul 1854. John Ellis is baptized 28 Nov 1855. Early in June we went on the steamboat "Arabia" and in about seven days we arrived at Florence. (journal of John Ellis) Mary Ann and John Ellis and Ann Emmett join the Daniel D. MacArthur Handcart Company 11 Jun 1856 and arrive in SLC 26 Sep 1856. John Ellis and his family settle in Ogden and have a farm. (Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database)
Anne Emmett age 19 leaves Liverpool on ship Cynosure 29 Jul 1855 from the port of Liverpool and arrives in New York Port 5 Sep 1855. (Ship records Cynosure and Mormon Immigration Index) Stayed at Castle Gardens for about 3 days and left with company for Iowa City, IA. She meets her sister and brother in law at Florence (there is a possibility that she went to Saint Louis and lived with her sister for about nine months) and is in the Daniel D. MacArthur handcart company (with John Ellis and Mary Ann Emmett Ellis). The company arrived in Salt Lake City 26 Sep 1856. They stayed in Salt Lake for a short period and settled in Ogden, Utah.(Mormon Pioneer Overland Travels Database). Ann Emmett marries Jonathan Browning 29 Mar 1859.
